More About Pokhara
Video Transcript
Pokhara is a small city of around 200 000 inhabitants in central Nepal. Most tourists visit Pokhara because it is the gateway to trekking in the Annapurna Sanctuary.
The streets of Pokhara are quite and relaxing and dotted with restaurants catering for foreign visitors.
On clear days the peak of Fish Tail reaches up from behind the hills. From Pokhara the peak appears just beside the hill town Sarangkot.
On a ridge above Phewa lake is the world peace pagoda, a great option for a short 1 day trek in Pokhara.
All along the main street of Pokhara you will find dozens of souvenir and trekking shops.
The trekking stores represent great value if you are willing to try your bartering skills. The goods are mostly fakes from China but are high enough quality to last the duration of your trek. If you are doing a more extreme trek or climbing a peak you may want to consider buying originals. In Pokhara should be able to deck yourself out with all the gear required for a fraction of the price you would pay back home.
The souvenir shops range from handicrafts, jewelry and tibetan goods such as hand painted Thangkas. As you walk the streets of Pokhara you may be approached by Tibetans selling handicrafts. Its a great personalized way to shop and find something unique for yourself. Phewa Lake is the second largest lake in Nepal, and is important in the lives of many of the local people. A short boat ride from the shores of the lake is a Hindu temple built on a small island.
Its a short ride there and back and certainly worth the trip to see the local visitors in worship.
Rafters practice in the lake in preparation for rafting trips in the area.
If you are really looking for an adrenaline rush, one of the most popular adventure activities on offer is parading. Paragliders launch from the surrounding hills and can stay airborne for long periods of time because of the alpine winds.
There is so much to see and do in Pokhara. If you are traveling in Nepal and are looking for a great place to settle for a few weeks, even a few months, Pokhara is one of the best options.
And who could argue with sunsets like this.
